Streptomyces

Ongoing project

Streptomyces is a commission for University of Dundee School of Life Sciences 'Medical Garden' project.

For this commission Chloe Fitzpatrick chose to focus on the bacterium Streptomyces.  Streptomyces is a specie commonly found in plant soil, and is very important to the medical field, producing a wide range of essential antibiotics.

She is in the process of making a pill shaped sculpture for the garden, using a pigment created from bacteria to dye bio-resin.  She is hoping to show people the true nature of antibiotics - all the colours and intricate forms of the bacteria used for medicine.

The sculpture will be surrounded by plants that have medical properties and other pieces made by Dundee-based designers.

Bioresin, cyanobacterium pigment, clay, felt.
